Sometimes it’s fun to see your childhood friends. You’re flooded with memories and remember the good old days. Other times it’s embarrassing when friends from your childhood end-up on national television for losing a bet and making a fool of themselves.

Denver Broncos fan Brady Wagner was so sure his team would beat the Patriots Sunday, he wagered a tattoo with a childhood friend. If Denver won, Wagner’s friend would get a Tim Tebow tattoo. If the Patriots won, Wagner agreed to get a Bill Belichick tattoo.

 

Brady, do you know you now have a Belichick tramp stamp?

And no, I’m not surprised by this. Maybe I should be embarrassed for admitting to know Brady.

J.C. Penney was forced to remove the shirt “I’m too pretty to do homework, so my brother has to do it for me” after an uproar this week in social media land.

Is it just selective outrage? I haven’t read or heard any outrage over these Girl Power shirts by David and Goliath.

And I haven’t heard a peep from anyone screaming to ban these kids shirts from David and Goliath.

Thankfully, David and Goliath have posted on their landing page “our apparel is stupid”, but I’m sure there is someone out there with too much time on their hands trying to ban David and Goliath.

I agree with Ricky Gervais when he said, “You have the right to be offended, and I have the right to offend you. But no one has the right to never be offended.”

The shirt is tacky, but if you don’t like it or it offends you don’t buy it. If the shirt doesn’t sell, then J.C. Penney will not purchase similar shirts in the future.

I’m curious, while everyone is so upset over the message this shirt sends to girls, but what about the message are the protestors sending to boys?  I’m confused.

What do you think is the J.C. Penney shirt outrageous? Or is just a case of too much outrage?

I don’t know if he is serious or not, but Dan Adler (D-CA) has some of the most bizarre, actually strange political ads of 2011. He is running for to replace the seat departed Rep. Jane Harman (D-CA) in California’s 36th district.

Do you know what a “mensch” is?

And no one will forget Patty Duke dropping the s-bomb in this ad for Adler. Caution, foul language.

Or the ever so classy, have your young son drop the s-bomb. Again, foul language.

Maybe his strategy is working after all. Now, we all know Dan Adler!

For some reason gambling is a touchy subject. I had the radio on while getting ready for my morning errands when Bud Hedinger, the Orlando morning talk show host quickly shot down the proposed legislation for five mega Las Vegas style casinos to be built throughout Florida.

Gambling On Casinos – Don’t Do It, Florida! As I told you this morning, there’s legislation on the table in Tallahassee that calls for 5 Las Vegas style mega-casino complexes to be built at various locations throughout Florida. This all about raising money for the state, but I’ll never support expanded gambling in Florida, because I believe it is fundamentally incompatible with the family-friendly image we market to the whole world. Here’s a look at what’s proposed, and I think you’ll agree, it’s the boldest pro-gambling measure we’ve ever seen. We’ll watch it closely as the legislative session unfolds.

Whoa, wait a minute. Mr. Hedinger, I do not agree with your assessment. Sorry.

Okay time for a quick disclaimer for new readers: I lived in Las Vegas. I love Las Vegas. I miss Las Vegas. 

Now, time for my rebuttal. Yes, Florida has a family-friendly image. We have Disney World, Sea World, Universal Studios, Busch Gardens and beautiful beaches. But, how do five casinos destroy the image of  family-friendy Florida?

Back in the day, Las Vegas had more than one casino that catered towards families.  MGM Grand Resort used to have MGM Grand Adventures Theme Park. Sadly, it closed in 2000. I know this doesn’t support my support for expanded casinos in Florida but wait just a minute.

My family went to Las Vegas every year when I was a kid. Some of my greatest childhood memories happened in Las Vegas. During one vacation my family (parents, aunt, uncle, cousins, sister and grandparents) rode the Grand Canyon Rapids (a white water rapids ride with animatronic pioneer prospectors and timed geysers) at MGM Grand Adventures over and over again. By the time we left the park, our wet shoes were squeaking on the strip while we walked back to our rooms at the Monte Carlo. We still laugh about it every time we get together.

And when our parents wanted to gamble, my sister and I would see the numerous fantastic shows Las Vegas is known for. Our first show was Mystere and I have loved Cirque du Soleil since. Next time I’m in Vegas I want to see Viva Elvis. I love Elvis and would enjoy seeing Cirque du Soleil’s tribute to Elvis.

Often, you could find my sister, cousins and I at the lazy river pool or at the wave pool. Sure Las Vegas is a mecca for gambling, but Sin City gave me some wonderful childhood memories.

Back to Florida’s five proposed casinos, I support the idea and the jobs they could create. My husband will be graduating in May with a Master’s in Information Systems and the opportunity to have a technology jobs in the casinos would be great. We already are a service industry state and more jobs would benefit the unemployed.

Families could spend a few days in Orlando visiting Disney, Universal and Sea World. After the attractions, the family could head to a casino and parents could gamble while kids enjoy the pool and the other activities at the resort. The family could even enjoy a beach day too at a beachside casino!

I’m not worried about mobster’s coming around and attacking people. Yes, that was one ridiculous argument I heard. Never once did that cross my mind when I lived in Vegas and I’m not worried about gangster’s if more casinos come to Florida. I think some people need to separate reality from what they’ve seen in a movie.

The local casino near us in Vegas had everything. We went to the movies there, ate at world class restaurants and had amazing entertainment. I think if those up-in-arms about the casinos would sit down, take a deep breath, stop hiding from Bugsy Siegel and look at the positive effects of the proposed casinos, maybe they would rethink their positions or at least think about it rationally.

That was my one-year-old daughter’s reaction to the Super Bowl XLV half-time show. She simply walked over and turned the television off. I guess she couldn’t handle it anymore. You know your performance is terrible when a one-year-old can’t stand to listen or watch it anymore.

Last night the Green Bay Packers beat the Pittsburg Steelers in Super Bowl XLV. The game was great, what was disappointing were almost all of the Super Bowl performers. Maroon 5 screeched and squealed through their pre-game performance. Christina Aguilera sang the wrong lyrics heard around the world as she screwed-up the words to the National Anthem.  In a statement announcing she would be performing the National Anthem on January 24th, Aguilera said, "I have been performing the anthem since I was seven years old and I must say the Super Bowl is a dream come true."

She does deserve credit for attempting to sing it live, most performers do not. I guess we know why now.

Maybe Christina should have tried Leslie Nielsen’s version of the National Anthem from The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad.

If the previous performers didn’t make your eardrums beg for mercy, The Black Eyed Peas did. Their performance was dull and forced. And then there was Fergie’s singing. I swear she screamed throughout the entire performance. All I can say is my ears are still ringing today. When my one-year-old daughter turns off the television one-third of the way through your performance you know it was awful.

The only saving grace, Keith Urban’s pre-game show and Usher’s routine during half-time. Maybe they should have been the main performers.

Rest in peace Leslie, we could have used your talents last night.

To kick off Christmas Week I’d like to share with you my family’s favorite Christmas movie, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation. I cannot believe this movie is 21-years-old! Where does time go? I’ve watched this movie every year since I was a little girl. I can’t imagine a year without watching it at least five times.

Two fun facts about Christmas Vacation. First, the assistant director of Christmas Vacation, Frank Capra III, is the grandson of the legendary Frank Capra, who directed It’s a Wonderful Life. The part where Clark “fixes” the newel post by sawing it off with a chainsaw is an homage to It’s a Wonderful Life.  The newel post at the Bailey’s house was also loose. Also, Russ is watching It’s a Wonderful Life on TV when his grandparents arrive. Second, in the scene where the two grandfathers are asleep in the armchairs while the Christmas parade is on TV in the background is real. The actors who played the grandfathers were supposedly both really asleep.

Okay, this is something I do not understand. The debate over whether to send your friends and family Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, or whatever Winter Holiday cards you may or may not celebrate.

I’m a Christian and I celebrate Christmas. I choose to send Christmas cards this time of year as a kind gesture towards those I appreciate in my life.  But when it comes to my business I’m sending non-offensive, politically correct Happy Holidays and Season’s Greetings cards to my clients. Why?

Am I afraid of offending someone and loosing their business? Maybe. I’m sending a nice card and gift expressing my gratitude for having them as clients. But who would be upset if I sent a Christmas card and he celebrates Kwanzaa or she celebrates Winter Solstice? Are Holiday cards deal breakers?

I really wonder how many people are offended by Christmas or really any religious Holiday cards. I receive Hanukkah cards from friends and I am in no way offended. I am happy to be thought of and sent a beautiful card.

Every year, my husband and I go through our list of friends and family trying to decide who we can send our family cards to and who gets the boring Season’s Greetings card.

If you receive a Holiday card from someone who celebrates a Holiday you do not, do you end your relationship?

I think I may have my answer. Just a guess, but American atheists may be offended by any religious card.

As one of my favorite atheist bloggers AllahPundit puts it, “Atheists, continuing to win friends and influence people.”

Am I the only the only person who doesn’t understand the Holiday card conundrum? What Holiday cards do you send,  if you send any at all?
